PwC Australia's 2026 AI Jobs Barometer found the volume of Australian job ads seeking AI skills more than doubled in twelve months — from 20,000 in 2024 to 41,000 in 2025, after four years of very little movement. AI-skilled workers now command an average wage premium of 62 per cent, up from 57. LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise list put AI Engineer at number one in Australia, with roughly 150 per cent growth.
Then there's the line inside that data that nobody quotes, and it's the one that matters most: of that increase, AI user roles grew by 19,300 while AI developer roles grew by 1,300.
Read that again. The surge isn't mostly people building models. It's people using them.
What the split actually tells you
If you're planning headcount off the headline number, you'll overbuild engineering and underbuild everything around it. The genuinely scarce hire is still the person who takes a model out of a notebook and into a monitored, maintained production system — which is exactly why AI engineers are so hard to find. But that's a small, expensive slice of a much bigger movement.
The bigger movement is capability. Businesses that ran a pilot in 2024 are now trying to make AI part of how work gets done, and that needs a different shape of person entirely.
The titles absorbing the demand
Three groups are doing the heavy lifting.
Strategy and advisory. AI Consultant, AI Strategist, AI Transformation Lead. These people map a process, choose the tools, and choreograph humans and agents around a business outcome. Plenty of Australian businesses need this capability for six months, not forever — which is why fractional AI leadership keeps coming up in briefs, and why we hold a bench of AI consulting talent rather than only permanent candidates.
Leadership. Director of AI, Head of AI Product, AI Transformation Lead. Get this hire right and you set the ceiling on everything below it. Get it wrong and you burn six to twelve months you can't get back — I've written the full brief on how to hire an AI Lead without getting it wrong.
MLOps Specialists and AI Platform Engineers: retrieval, observability, guardrails, evaluation. Unglamorous, and the difference between "we tried a pilot once" and "AI is now part of how we work." I've mapped these titles and the rest of the emerging set in AI job roles 2026.
If you're hiring into this
Define the role precisely before you advertise. An AI Engineer, an MLOps Specialist and an AI Strategist are paid differently for different work, and a vague ad attracts everyone and convinces no-one. Benchmark against live roles rather than last year's salary guide — a 62 per cent premium moves fast. And move quickly, because slow multi-stage processes are where the strongest AI candidates quietly disappear.
If you're an engineer reading this and wondering which way "up" goes, that's its own question — I've unpacked it in from AI Engineer to AI Lead or Specialist.
